Authentically Me
Style is much more than the shoes we put on our feet, the clothes in our closet, the makeup we buy, or the hairstyle we wear. Style is an outer expression of who we are on the inside. It tells the world about our personality, work ethic, our mood, and what we do for a living. For example, are you outgoing or timid? Are you polished and ready to go, or did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? Are you feeling sunny and bright, or tired and grumpy? Do you spend your time in a prestigious office, or at a fitness center?
So much can be said about who we are in just a glance from those around us. Science says that we have a 7 second window to make a first impression. That means that if we are meeting someone new, going for a job interview, preparing for an important presentation, it is in our best interest to be thinking about what we want to say about ourselves when we are shaking that person’s hand, when we are walking into our potential work environment or introducing ourselves to the group.
Style also can be used to attract the right kind of attention, or the wrong kind of attention. If you look classy, polished, and put together, chances are that you will attract others who also present themselves in a similar sort of way. If you are wearing sweatpants, a dirty t-shirt and your hair is a mess, is that going to invite successful people into your life? Probably not.
I am not suggesting that the way we look on the outside is the most important part of our lives, and I’m certainly not trying to say that we need to look put-together 24/7. I’m simply saying that style is an important tool that we can use to our advantage in certain situations. I am challenging you to match your inner excellence with outer excellence…to take pride in who you are and walk confidently each day. Iris Apfel once said, “If your hair is done properly and you’re wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything!”. As a woman and a hairdresser, I can gladly say that I support that statement!
Blessings,
